Project Checklist

  • Give information to new members as they join about vacant E-Board Positions

  • Document every meeting the E-Board has by making sure minutes are taken

  • Submit a room request for an activity immediately after the meeting where it has been finalized

  • Transition new President to my position before I leave

Documentation Plan

For documentation I will submit the minutes from executive board meetings that we have, as well as fliers advertising activities that the society presents. The minutes will be taken digitally throughout our meetings, and all of the fliers and advertisements that we will make for society events will be made digitally before they are printed, making both easy to access and submit.

Anticipated Obstacles

I need to make sure I prioritize my time so that I am committing as much as I possibly can to the society and making sure that the members are a priority in my decisions. I also need to do a better job of being on top of deadlines for room requests and making sure activates are well planned and coordinated. It can be easy to let little things slip such as refreshments and organization when I am so concerned with just making the activity happen. I need to make a plan and stick to it when running events. It can be hard to motivate people to come to activities sometimes, so making sure that if an event is not as attended as I hope it will be it will not get me down and I can continue to do my best.

Pre-Project Reflection

In the past, I have had opportunities to take on leadership roles in clubs and groups that I have been a part of, whether that was in high school or through recreational leagues, but this will be the largest leadership role I have taken on. I will be directly in charge of an organization that impacts a lot of different students, and with that will come a lot of responsibility. I always do my best to rise to the challenge and put 100% into whatever it is I am doing. I have full intention of doing that with this position as well. I feel like I will be getting more out of being the president than I would have otherwise do to it being my EDGE project. I had no idea that Southern Utah University had such a program before I came here, but I absolutely see the benefit that students gain from completing a project while they are in their undergraduate studies. There is a lot of experience to be gained by doing a hands-on project, and a lot of employers are looking for someone who has accomplished a project or been able to plan something relatively large and follow through on it. With my role in the NSLS I am hoping to be able to use this project opportunity to its maximum potential, and I know the NSLS is a great resource to do that.

My experience I have had with the NSLS has been very rewarding already. I received an invitation when I first arrived here at SUU and had no idea what the society was or what I was becoming a part of, other than I knew I wanted to take advantage of as many opportunities as I could while I was in college. When I went to my orientation, I learned different leaderships on a basic level, as well as trying out those skills with other people who attended and being able to put what I learned into action. At the end of the meeting, the facilitator mentioned that there were opportunities to gain even more leadership experience by joining the executive board, and I decided that if I was really going to be involved in this organization I was going to be as involved as I could be. I sent in a video trying to get the secretary position, and I heard back that I was accepted and that I start attending the bi-weekly meetings. While I was doing this I was able to serve under two different presidents, and was able to compare their styles and find things like I liked and did not like about each of them. For example, one president was very personable and listened to feedback from each member of the board, but tended to be very sloppy about getting things done and making sure everything was organized. The next president did an amazing job of staying on top of things and making sure everything was well planned and meticulously prepared. We increased our meetings to weekly and were able to get a lot more done. However because she was so well organized and seemed to know exactly what she was doing, the board became a little stiffer and not as much of an open and relaxing environment as it was before. I learned a lot though, and know what kind of president I want to be based on the examples I have seen and the time I myself was able to spend as a member of the board.

I am going to take my time as president to make the e-board as involved as I can, while still taking the responsibility of the things we do. I want to make sure credit is given where it is due, along with holding people responsible for activities and ideas that they come up with, especially myself. If something goes wrong, ten I will take the blame for it, and use it as a learning opportunity to know how I can do better next time and improve myself along with the society. I am really looking forward to working with a large variety of people and seeing they different styles and ways that people approach things and how working together with and leading a group can lead to more successful outcomes than we would have achieved otherwise. I know that this will be a tough project that will require a large time investment, but I am going to do my best to impact as many students as I can and help them learn leadership traits and qualities that I have learned while continuing to develop my own.

Project Overview: Welcome

PROJECT OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION

For my Edge Project, I was the President of the Southern Utah University chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success. In that position, I planned and organized events for the members of the society to participate in. I also worked with an Executive board made up of other students as well as a SUU staff member where we would discuss how things were going in the club and what can be done to help students get the most out of their membership in the society. I had a meeting every week with a representative from the national office of the NSLS where I was instructed on leadership skills and learn how to better work under an instructor and apply what I am taught to the members of the club at large. I had the privilege to interact directly with other students, and helped them to develop leadership skills by allowing them opportunities to serve and learn.
